'Planet Of The Apes' Parties Like It's 1968 At Box Office

'The Change-Up' fails to similarly revive old premise.

The "Planet of the Apes" franchise was all the rage in the late 1960s, and this past weekend, what's old was new again as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" dominated the box office.

The latest installment of the "Apes" series (itself a loose prequel to the 2001 reboot) enjoyed the fifth-biggest August opening ever (ninth when adjusted for ticket price inflation) with $54 million across 5,400 screens in North America, according to studio estimates. It also earned much more favorable reviews than the Tim Burton-directed "Planet of the Apes," released a decade ago and starring Mark Wahlberg.

Released in 1968, the original "Planet of the Apes" was based on a novel by Pierre Boulle and spawned several sequels, a cartoon series, action figures, lunch boxes and more through the early '70s. Several of the late Charlton Heston's lines from the sci-fi classic are often quoted in film-fan circles and the first movie's climax is regarded as one of the greatest twists/reveals in modern cinema.

See What's Next For James Franco.

"The Change-Up" also looked to revive a dormant premise but failed to deliver. The comedy opened at number four with just $13.5 million. When asked what made this "body swap" movie different from flicks like "Freaky Friday," co-star Jason Bateman told late-night host Jimmy Fallon it's the R-rating given to his team-up with Ryan Reynolds. "Face/Off" director John Woo, the crew behind "The Hot Chick" and "Switch" writer/director Blake Edwards would likely beg to differ. The movie was dismissed by 80 percent of critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

"The Smurfs" — based on the hit '80s Saturday morning cartoon, itself originated by a series of comic strips from the late 1950s — was number two with $21 million, for a 10-day total of $76.2 million. "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau's "Cowboys and Aliens" was number three with $15.7 million for a 10-day total of $67.4 million. The Marvel Comics "Avengers" prequel of sorts "Captain America: The First Avenger" rounded out the top five with $13 million for a $143.2 million total.

Next weekend's new releases include the comedy "30 Minutes or Less," starring Jesse Eisenberg and former MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari, and "Final Destination 5."

Check out everything we've got on "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Cowboys and Aliens."

Katy Perry, Adele And More 2011 VMA Nominees ... Possibly

Bigger Than the Sound tries to predict the nominees for this year's Video Music Awards.
By James Montgomery

I've been told that the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards -- which air live Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV -- are going to be announced on MTV and MTV.com on Wednesday night (July 20) at 11 p.m ET, and that means you should probably get ready for a whole lot of Katy Perry. And Adele. And Britney Spears. And Lady Gaga. Oh, and Rihanna too.

That's because, to paraphrase Beyoncé (oh yeah, she'll probably get nominated too), it's been girls who've run the world in 2011, and the VMAs will probably be no exception. Perry — who has basically been unstoppable since last summer — figures to be the most nominated artist, with this year's breakout star, Adele, close behind. Britney, Gaga and all the rest figure to be in the hunt too. In fact, one has to wonder if the folks behind the show will just go ahead and eliminate the Best Male Video category altogether. More room for the ladies that way.

Of course, we won't know for sure until those nominations are officially revealed, but while we wait, I figured it was time to dust off the old Prognostication Cap and try to predict the 2011 VMA nominees in advance. I've done this for seemingly every awards show in the past, and sometimes I even manage to avoid embarrassing myself completely (not always, though).

So without any advance knowledge — and using as many sweeping generalizations as humanly possible — here are my picks for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Accuracy not entirely guaranteed.

Best Male Video
In a year dominated by females, I suppose someone has to win Best Male Video. I think it's a given that Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Eminem all land nods here, and I suspect Justin Bieber will sneak in too, if only because it builds off his Best New Artist win last year. The fifth spot is up for grabs, though in a pinch, I'll go with Pitbull, if only because of the recent success of "Give Me Everything." Lupe Fiasco or Trey Songz are also viable choices. My picks:

» Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
» Chris Brown, "She Ain't You"
» Eminem feat. Rihanna, "Love The Way You Lie"
» Justin Bieber, "U Smile"
» Pitbull, "Give Me Everything"

Best Female Video
Sure, Video of the Year is the night's biggest award, but given the success of every artist with a pair of X chromosomes, the Best Female Video might be the toughest — and not just to win. Predicting who even gets nominated is a challenge, considering there are only five spots available. Adele and Katy Perry seem mortal locks, and Rihanna is close. Britney will probably earn a nom too, which means that either Beyoncé, Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj will be left on the outside looking in. Told you this was going to be tough. My picks:

» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
» Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"
» Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)"
» Katy Perry, "E.T."
» Rihanna, "S&M"

Best Rock Video
My official title at MTV News is "rock editor," but even I had a hard time coming up with five nominees here. Since 30 Seconds to Mars won last year, I suspect they'll be back to defend their crown. Folks were excited about the Foo Fighters' return, so pencil them in too. Mumford & Sons may very well be the year's most unexpected success, which should earn them a nod. The other two slots? I'm not gonna lie, I just picked names out of a hat.

» 30 Seconds to Mars, "Hurricane"
» Foo Fighters, "Rope"
» Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
» Linkin Park, "Waiting for the End"
» Mumford & Sons, "Little Lion Man"

Best Hip-Hop Video
A wide-open category, and one that raises several questions: Can Eminem win for the second year in a row? Will Nicki Minaj manage to bum-rush the boys' club? Is Kanye West's epic "Runaway" mini-movie even eligible? I'm not going to pretend to know all the answers, but it certainly makes for an interesting field. In the end, I left Em off — since "Love the Way You Lie" was released in such a nebulous time (August 2010, a month before last year's VMAs and a full 12 months before this year's) — and went with the Beastie Boys, since I have a creeping suspicion they'll earn a nod or two, and this seems as logical a place as any. Nicki and Kanye are in (though I went with the latter's "Monster" video), and so is Lil Wayne. For the last spot, I went with Lupe Fiasco, though it wouldn't surprise me to see Tyler, the Creator here instead.

» Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise"
» Kanye West (featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj), "Monster"
» Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot 7 Foot"
» Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On"
» Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"

Best Pop Video
Another big-time category, another bunch of deserving artists destined to be left out. I like Britney's, Katy's and Gaga's chances, and I'll toss Rihanna into the mix too. For the fifth spot, I went with Bruno Mars, since, otherwise, this category would basically just be Best Female Video, Part II. Of course, in doing that, I excluded Adele, Beyoncé, Ke$ha and about a dozen other worthy acts too. Prognostication is hard work, people.

» Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"
» Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
» Katy Perry, "E.T."
» Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
» Rihanna, "S&M"

Best New Artist
Who will follow in the footsteps of Biebus Christ (and Lady Gaga) and take home the Moonman for Best New Artist? Good question! This is always one of the hardest categories to predict, and this year is no different: The only sure things seem to be Mumford & Sons and Wiz Khalifa, and though Robyn isn't exactly new, she's new enough here (and made some terrific strides over the past 12 months), so I think she's a lock. In a pinch, I'll pick Foster the People (big radio hit) and Tyler, the Creator (big buzz), though Kreayshawn could sneak in too.

» Foster the People
» Mumford & Sons
» Robyn
» Tyler, the Creator
» Wiz Khalifa

Video of the Year
Last year's Video of the Year race featured a trio of underdogs — 30 Seconds to Mars, B.o.B, Florence and the Machine — thrown into the mix. Will 2011 follow suit? Probably not. Adele seems to be a no-brainer, even if most folks have never seen the video for "Rolling in the Deep." Katy, too, but it remains to be seen which of her videos gets the nod. (I went with "Firework." It's mad inspirational.) Em will be back — though one has to wonder if "Love the Way You Lie" peaked too early to be considered a genuine front-runner — and Gaga should return also. I went dark-horse with my fifth pick, taking the Foo Fighters' "Rope" over bigger clips from Beyoncé and Rihanna, mostly because I've got a sweet spot for VHS.

» Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
» Eminem (featuring Rihanna), "Love the Way You Lie"
» Foo Fighters, "Rope"
» Katy Perry, "Firework"
» Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"

Another Kanye West Rant: ?People Look at Me Like I?m Hitler? (Video)

Kanye West is spouting off at the mouth once again. Fans at a recent concert found themselves on the other end of one of West?s infamous rants, this time he claimed ?People Look at Me Like I’m Hitler? While performing at the Big Chill festival, he was the headliner, on Saturday night Kanye West decided to have one of those famous rants of his. No word on what started it but the singer used his time on stage to go on about how he is misunderstood and so under-appreciated, blah blah blah. I have a hard time mustering up any sympathy for this guy, especially after he said this. I walk through the hotel and I walk down the street and people look at me like I’m insane, like I’m Hitler. One day the light will shine through and one day people will understand everything I ever did. That my friends is the clean version too, he added some colorful expletive words as well but that isn?t surprising considering it is Kanye. You can hear the whole entire thing for yourself in the below video and trust me it is something to listen to. I don?t know about the rest [...]

Sean Kingston Details 'Life-Or-Death' Accident

'What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings,' he says during 'MTV First: Sean Kingston.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Sean Kingston sat down with MTV News on Tuesday night (August 2) and opened up for the first time about the jet-ski accident that landed him in the hospital. During "MTV First: Sean Kingston," the singer spoke candidly with Sway Calloway at his house in Miami about the day that changed his life forever, letting fans know that months after his jet ski crashed into a bridge near his home in Florida, he's now back and better than ever.

"I'm doing good. I'm feeling great. I'm excited. I'm happy," he said. "A lot of people don't know it was a deeper situation. I had open heart surgery and I had two other surgeries; it was a life-or-death situation."

Kingston — the Jamaican-American singer who broke onto the scene with the "Stand by Me"-sampling song "Beautiful Girls" and scored another hit with the Justin Bieber collabo "Eenie Meenie" last year — was rushed to the hospital May 29 after a jet-ski crash. He explained to Sway that he was going about 35 miles an hour when he miscalculated how high the tide had risen and collided with a bridge.

The singer revealed for the first time in the sit-down that just as he was being released from the hospital for injuries related to the crash, he was rushed into surgery to deal with a newly discovered heart condition. "They were gonna send me home, but then I had felt a pain in my left chest, and I told my mom," he explained. "They rushed me and they did a lot of scans on me, [and] they said I couldn't leave."

It was discovered that blood had filled up in his chest and his aorta was torn. He went into surgery several times to fix the condition, knowing that the risks were high, but he survived, and now he's focused on the positive. "I'm 100 percent right now," he said. "I've been in the house chilling, about to start work on my new album. I got L.A. Reid now as my new president. I got a story to tell now."

Kingston isn't taking his new lease on life lightly. "What the accident basically taught me is, in life, you have to count your blessings," he said. "You just got to keep God present at all times and think about the consequences."

During the chat, Kingston opened up about the details of the accident, talked about the support he's received from celebrity pals like Justin Bieber and Chris Brown, his new music and finally getting the chance to meet the man who saved him after he crashed. MTV News will be rolling out more from the interview with Kingston, who thanked his fans for all their support after the accident.

Share your well-wishes for Kingston in the comments below.

Olivia Wilde The Change-Up Interview

Olivia Wilde The Change-Up Interview

Since separating from husband Tao Ruspoli in February, Olivia Wilde has been linked in the press to Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Reynolds. Is it even possible for Wilde to have been spotted with all these suitors in that time? Wilde cleared up some of the dating rumors to iVillage correspondent Kristyn Burtt.

"I heard that I went on a date in a restaurant where I've never been, so I wondered who it was at that restaurant who looks like me," says Wilde. "I think I must have a twin somewhere. I just hope she's having fun, but I hope she doesn't do anything too stupid."

Wilde's career is too valuable right now for a phantom twin to create drama! The 27-year-old appears in The Change-Up (opening Aug. 5) alongside Reynolds and Jason Bateman. Thanks to her funny costars, she had to learn quickly how to keep a straight face in some awkward situations.

"We had some moments, particularly when I was kind of half-naked during my striptease scene and we had both Ryan and Jason in the scene," tells Wilde. "They had to keep switching out during shooting and I was like 'This is a strange experience.'"

Wilde is no stranger to playing powerful female characters: She was plucky doctor Thirteen in House M.D. and plays a secretive cowgirl in Cowboys & Aliens. For her role of Sabrina in The Change-Up, Wilde wanted to take the character beyond the stereotype of the female romantic lead and give her more realistic traits.

"I wanted her to be atypical, I wanted her to be complex," she says. "She's really powerful, smart and professional, but she's also really wild, sexy and fun. I think that many of us women have both of those sides to us, and often we're not really depicted that way."

Watch our exclusive video interview to hear Wilde dish about acting alongside some of Hollywood's hottest leading men and what it was like working with her goofball costars in The Change-Up.
